The process of sharpening a set of wood chisels involves three stages: grinding, honing, and polishing.

Grinding is the first step necessary to remove any nicks or damage and setting the initial bevel angle. You will need a coarse sharpening stone or a grinding wheel for that. Maintain a consistent angle of 25 degrees and move it back and forth across the stone or wheel.

Next, refine the edge using a finer sharpening stone (1000-4000 grit waterstone) or honing guide, moving the chisel in a figure-eight motion.

Finish with a very fine sharpening stone (8000 grit or higher) or a leather strop. Apply a polishing compound for an extra-fine finish.
